Easy Ways To Make Your Wedding Reception Unique

Chances are that your guests have been to many wedding receptions in the past. Here are some easy ways to make yours stand out.

Pick An Unusual Entrance Song-

Check out your music collection and write down the first ten songs that appeal to you. Then decide which one of those would be best for you to walk into at your reception. Chances are you will come up with an Entrance Song nobody else has thought of. One rule of thumb is- the higher the energy of the song, the better. This applies whether it's Classical, Rock, Hip Hop, Swing, etc.

Don't Just Enter, MAKE An Entrance-

The difference can be subtle or more pronounced but it is important that you, in some way, visually acknowledge your guests as part of your Grand Entrance. This can be done by simply pausing to let them get a good look at you while they snap a picture, waving back at them or perhaps taking a bow or giving high fives. Now you have included your guests in the joy of the moment by making them PART of your entrance!

Change The Order-

Often the First Dance comes after the meal. But there's no rule that says you can't do it right after your entrance. The Best Man's toast can be at the beginning of the meal... or later, towards the end of it. Just because you throw your bouquet doesn't mean you have to do the whole garter removal and throwing thing. If you want, you can the pass on the removal and just have a garter toss or you can dispense with the whole formality.

That Sounds Different-

You have an opportunity to create a unique experience for your guests from the time they first step foot in your reception. It is important that your reception have it's own "sound". Preferable a unique mix of songs that people don't usually come in contact with at the office, the mall or while listening to the car radio.

You can turn your room into a romantic Spanish villa with flamenco fusion latin guitar. Or create a swinging, "Rat Pack" atmosphere with classic big band music. You could even transport your guests to a sunny, tropical seashore with the right mix of beach music.

We had one couple who got engaged in Italy and chose artists like Dean Martin, Andrea Bocelli and Louis Prima for their dinner music. The choice of sounds that sets the tone for your reception is limited only by your imagination. The goal is to give your guests something they haven't experienced at any other wedding they've been to.

Saying "Thank You"-

A simple "thank you" to your guests over the mic can mean so much. Publicly expressing your appreciation for their participation at your wedding is one of the classiest and most heartfelt things you can do. And in case you should miss anyone during your mingling time, you have at least already acknowledged your gratitude to them.

Choreograph Your First Dance-

A choreographed First Dance is always a special treat for you and your guests. We've seen waltzes, swing dances and even a tango or two. A bit of work is involved here as you may need to take some lessons and rehearse prior to your "performance". The pay off is creating an unforgettable moment for you and your guests. A moment that never fails to get a great response from all in attendance.

Use Creative Lighting-
The right lighting can add color and depth to any room. Colored beams of uplighting on the walls, a pinspot to highlight the cake and dynamic projection dance floor club lighting are some ways to create a special atmosphere. Well planned lighting has a dramatic effect on the look and feel of your reception.

Avoid Musical Cliches-

Party songs that have been played at every wedding in the past twenty years can be replaced with more inventive choices. Jettison those played-out tunes like "Love Shack", "La Bamba", "Mony Mony", "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "I Will Survive". Update your playlist with fresh ideas. Examples of newer songs that have wide appeal include "Smooth" by Santana, "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, "Get The Party Started" by Pink, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. This is a good starting point and the music can get more cutting edge as the night goes on.

Promo, Promo, Promo-

Have you ever been to a wedding where you felt like you didn't know what was going on? Your MC should let your guests know what they have to look forward to later. Attendees will be less likely to leave early if they know that the cake cutting is coming up shortly. Or that if they go now they will miss the first dance. Make sure your MC understands the power of the promotional announcement!

My "Cold Case" TV Fantasy - Getting Lilly and the "Cold Case" Detective Squad Busted!

I watch "Cold Case" on CBS regularly even though I admit I hate the shows Detective Squad as well as how each case is solved by an unnecessary confession from the killer and then the victim's ghost appears like in a music video, the end. No, I'm not on crack!

The thing I hate most about "Cold Case" is the detectives attitudes. They think they have the right to go gangbusters and accuse every person they interview of being the Anti-Christ. These suspects in turn say they didn't do it and like musical chairs turn the arrogant detectives onto another person to smirk at and be nasty too.

At the end of each episode, without any real solid evidence that would actually get the murderer tried in court or convicted, the killer who has concealed his "perfect crime" for like forever, suddenly decides without a lawyer present, to confess. Magically, the victim's ghost then appears in a trance like kind of music video to swirling or slow dancing music. The end.

I realize "Cold Case" is supposed to be dramatic entertainment for which writers take dramatic liberties to fit the show in an hour format but its a lot easier for me to suspend belief for a show like "Prison Break" then "Cold Case". "Cold Case" tries to present itself in a somber realistic manner but there are a lot of people watching who say, Bogus Man!

If I had my way, as payback to the detectives, I'd do a sequel to a previous episode where it now turns out that the detectives, pressured "the obvious killer" to give a false confession and he's found innocent in Court and truly never did the crime. It would make a great season finale and give the detectives pause for thought on their methods. To top it off, you could have the Ghost of the victim then appearing when the killer is found innocent, finger scolding the detectives to the music of "Ride Your Pony" and see the innocent non-killer smiling with a big grin. The End.

Dealing With Music Critics

If you are an aspiring songwriter, musician or indie artist, then sooner or later you will come face to face with music critics. The question is, how will you respond to them?

Last Saturday night I watched a program about The Legends of Rockabilly Music. It was fun to look back in the history of rock and roll and see the pioneering artists who started it all. Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis were among the various stars being featured.

What struck me most about these young performers was the shear determination they had to stay the course. Regardless of what the music critics said, they believed in their music and kept right on going. It wasn't always easy for them either. But that's probably the way it is for many of the famous people we admire today. We see the end result of their effort and think- wow, what a lucky break. But we often miss the hard road they had to follow in order to get to that place of recognition and respect.

Take Elvis Presley for instance. Every one of the previously mentioned "legends of rockabilly music" credited Elvis as being the one who most influenced their own style and sound. His spark ignited a wild-fire which eventually spread out and touched the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and many others. Most people realize that this flame continues to burn white hot and it's effect is still widely heard in much of today's popular music.

But it wasn't always smooth sailing. At the beginning of his career, Elvis Presley faced some music critics of his own. Time magazine once called him the "Hi luh-huh-huh-huv-huv yew-hew" dreamboat groaner. Back then, some critiques even contained elements of racial prejudice, calling Presley's blues influenced sound "vulgar jungle music."

During those early days Elvis was once given an opportunity to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Even though the audience responded well to his music, an executive of the show told him later "You ain't going nowhere, son. You may as well stick to driving a truck." History proved that man dead wrong! In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Elvis #3 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. So, please let this be an encouragement when you face your own music critics!

Above all, don't let the threat of criticism spoil your dreams. I heard someone say the other day that "the dream of your heart might be bigger than the environment you're in." Other people might not share your vision. They may not understand you. They may not offer any support. But don't let them hold you down. You must be willing to step out of the safe zone and believe in your musical gift. Forget what the critics say. Who are "they" anyway? Just follow your dreams and sing your heart out!

High School Musical Birthday Party Ideas

One of the most popular, if not the most popular, shows among kids is High School Musical. This show now has two movies, with a third on the way, and has become an unbelievable phenomenon that has made stars out of the actors in the show, and turned millions of kids onto music.

Obviously, when something becomes this popular, it is only a matter of time before your kids start asking for a High School Musical-themed birthday party. So what ideas are good for this type of birthday party? Below are just a few examples.

Send The Invites

You can go two routes in terms of invitations. You can use invitations that come with the High School Musical party supplies, or you can go a step further just by using your computer. Print off tickets for the kids so they can take the tickets with them and get entry into the party at your house. Make it look like they are tickets to a special High School Musical show, starring your child. If a child forgets to bring their invite, no worries, let them in. You can even stamp their hands for reentry, just to add a bit more style to the whole thing.

Watch the Movies

What would a High School Musical-themed birthday party be without watching the movies? So, rent the movies, if you don't already own them, and treat the kids to the movies while you prepare the rest of the birthday party. It is up to you if you want to show both of the movies, or just one of them. If you only have time for one, ask the kids which one they want to see and then go with that one for the kids to watch.

Dance Competition

One big thing about High School Musical is the dancing. Everyone in the movies dances, so get the kids dancing too. You can even have a dance contest that will have the kids showing their stuff on the dance floor. At the end of the dance contest, award everyone an individual award so that no one feels out of place. You can range it from "Best Dancer" and "Killer Moves!" to "Wackiest Dance" and "Future Star!"

High School Musical is unbelievably popular and if your child wants a High School Musical-themed birthday party, you need to be ready to provide it. However, thanks to creativity and some birthday party supplies, you can create a birthday party they will remember for a very, very long time.

Figure Skating - Facts About Inline Skating

The inline skates that are made specifically for the figure skaters are having a different design.

It has a stream-lined frame that boasts more control and less weight than regular inline skates. Also, its front stopper is similar to a toe pick. The boot is designed in such a way that it can bend and support at the same time. This allows the skater to make jumps and spins.

However, without these special skates, serious figure skaters should never cross train with inline skating. Roller blading should be done only when ice time is limited or unavailable.

However, make sure that the basic elements are practiced only on inline skates. Avoid roller blading as it can hinder an elite figure skaters progress.

Actually, the two edges on each ice skate blade have four sides that the expert skaters learn to use during the on-ice footwork. A wheel that could replace the concave steel blades will be highly advantageous.

Wheels require a different type of balance and maneuvering than the blade edges and therefore, students learning in-line skating are at a disadvantage.

A serious ice skater should never switch back and forth from ice skates to roller blades as this will slow down their progress in the development of balance and edge moves on ice.

Roller blading has adverse effects on ice skaters and therefore, off-ice skating should be limited for athletes as they progress to edge jumps, spins, and deep footwork.

But, that does not mean that figure skaters have no other cross-training options. For effective cross-training, figure skaters can try resistance training, plyometrics, pilates, dance, mountain biking, jogging and hiking.

Badminton, tennis, swimming, soccer and racquetball can also help the serious ice skaters to develop high level of fitness required for a good performance.
